True story: the first time my mom saw me solve a simple 3×3 Rubik’s Cube, she thought I was a genius. In reality, solving a Rubik’s Cube is actually quite simple, as long as you can remember a set of simple algorithms (but of course I wasn’t going to tell her that).
That said, I will admit that I was pretty proud of myself when I solved the puzzle for the first time. I rode my high horse for a while, impressing my family and friends with my new ability, but at a certain point, I was humbled by the MoYu 13×13 Speed Cube Puzzle, A.K.A. the largest cube currently in production.
Let’s put this into perspective for a moment. As of 2016, the world record for fastest solve of a 3×3 cube was 4.73 seconds. The record for a 7×7 cube is 2 minutes 20.66 seconds. At this time, no world records are kept for 13×13 cubes, but if you consider the rate of increase in time, factor in cube size and carry the one, basic math will tell you that even the world’s fastest cube solvers would require at least 67.1523 days of solving time before they could solve this monster cube! Ok, so maybe my math is a bit off, but it still doesn’t make this massive cube any less impressive.
